meditation master jinbodhi's dharma teachingslead a bodhisattva life hello, everyone!(hello, master!) though time is limited, with your abundant excitement and joy, i'll try to give you more time to practice. are you feeling well?(very well.) you should be experiencing benefits now.(yes.) yes. compared to the first day,you must have a lot more energy. even if you practiceconscientiously for 3 hours,
your overall physical condition, including fatigue, discomfort and evenworries, will be completely transformed; you'll become relaxed, happy and at ease. why have i spent all these yearsdedicating my life to spreading the buddhadharma, practice, and meditation in particular? they're really good. after a tiring and busy week, peoplemay relax in many different activities: playing sports, hiking, jogging, fishing, or playing mahjong. none of these are as effective asmeditating for 3 hours as i advise.
your fatigue will disappear quickly. joyful, positive, healthy energywill fill your body. how wonderful! this benefit alone will take usa lifetime to study and understand. this is the so-called inconceivablephenomenon of buddhism. just through chanting and visualization, almost motionless action, we can achieve such good effects.it's just inconceivable! even now,i still find it hard to understand. it's impossible to use a generallyaccepted theory to explain it, such as spontaneous fasting: no eating,or eating a little, for a long time.
people who don't know about it may say,"isn't it a sudden gastric disease?" no. gastric diseasescause pain and discomfort, but spontaneous fastingtranscends the limits of life. generally, one starves to deathin 7 or 8 days without eating. but with spontaneous fasting, one stays vigorous even after 15 days; illness may be cured and one has lots ofenergy and remains in high spirits. after a few days' practice, almosteveryone will become better tempered. of course, i don't meanthe change of personality. that is hard to alter.i mean your temper.
one's temper may be good or bad.but during a certain period, one can easily lose one's temper.right? everyone has this experience. the human body changes cyclicallyevery month, or every 100 days, on some days, one is always very happy, remaining calm even in the face of troubleand never becoming angry. other times, for no reason, one loses his temper at whatever happens, and feels even worse when nothinghappens. right? yes. but why? it's because of the body's problems, such as fatigue. if one is exhausted, one's wordsnever sound pleasant.
among laborers like miners, construction workers, bricklayers and so on, many talk coarsely, very directly, and argue in the most unrefined language. why? because of tiredness. exhaustion makes one lose one's temper.a bad temper causes unpleasant speech and even unpleasant facial expressions. but after some practice, you lookeven-tempered and become milder. does losing our temper affect our body?yes. many physical changeswill certainly occur. accordingly, mental change will follow.one will be at ease and become healthy.
after these days' practice,if you feel benefits and obvious changes, please raise your hands.almost everyone does. thank you! quite a few were complaining freaks, happy about nothing at the beginning. "why is the ceiling so high?"or "why is the ceiling so low?" a cushion given or removed, they'd say:"why give me a cushion or take it away?" wow, no matter what, they were irritated. irritation and fatigue are caused by stress. but after 7 days, no one complains.everyone is smiling and happy. so we can understand sakyamuni buddha'sachievement. he practiced for 7 or 8 years.
of course, he was a personof great capacity. it's truly incredible. his innate energy is also extraordinary. after 7 or 8 years' practice,he attained buddhahood. he sees through humansand the whole world, which is inevitably related to the energyaccumulated during his years of practice. his physical bodywas completely transformed as well. after practicingwith a correct technique, eventually our body can be transformed. so, after sakyamuni buddha's nirvana, his bones became sarira.
at cremation, ordinary people's bones areburned into ashes, whereas his weren't. a piece of the buddha's finger sarirais stored at famen temple in china. other pieces are storedin sri lanka and burma. later, other discovered pieceswere considered to be his sarira. in fact, many later great buddhists and sages also left behind sariraafter their nirvana. unlike ordinary people, their bonesdon't disintegrate when burned. i've seen many kinds of sarira. some resemble colorful precious stones;others colorful glass beads.
a long-time disciplewho used to practice with me in china passed away in vancouver. he was cremated in a funeral parlor. after cremation, many pieces of sarira were found. miraculously, there were pieces of sariralike gold, as heavy as pieces of gold. they were the size of a green bean, over 10 pieces. we asked his familyif he had any gold fillings. no, he had good teeth.he never wore gold rings either. was a gold ring put on his fingerbefore his cremation?
impossible. he suddenly got sick, went to the hospital, and never came out. in fact, he wasn't sick, but in great discomfort and died soonafter arriving at the hospital. golden sarira after cremation appeared.some resembled flowers. it's really miraculous. i'm not talking about death now,but that after practice, our body can be transformed. so, it isn't hard to understandbuddha's transcending wisdom. seeing through the worldmakes him understand.
so, successful practice takes time. we have to practiceconscientiously and sincerely. the methods that i've taughtbring you fitness and achievement without any deviation. i hope this discussionwill benefit many people. even if you don't see me very often, you still need to practice hard. there is no absolutely smooth roadin this world. if there is, it's only a short section. wide, straight roads onlylast for a short section.
the rest are rough, full of bumps. this reminds us thatour life's journey runs the same way. life's most valuable things may surroundus, or show up in the most difficult times. achievement in practice is the same. the more difficult the environment isand the more sincere you are, the better effects. it's like if you're given a bowl of ricewhile in dire poverty, you'll never forget itand tell your children to be grateful. when it's freezing coldand someone gives you a coat,
though it's dirty and old, you'll be grateful forever. yes. it's the same for practice. the more difficult the environment is,the more sincere our practice must be. then it's easierto reach the highest state, and the meritand energy are the strongest. if you're casual and take it easy, you'll be distracted; the practice is less effective. i hope you keep practicing diligentlyafter this class. also, helping othersis the way of bodhisattva.
it can enhance our wisdom, store merit, and increase our energy. also, before teaching others, you have to think through the buddhadharma, truthsand wisdom i've taught several times. this will enhance your understandingand lift you to a higher state of mind. so helping others is a good methodto swiftly uplift yourself. therefore, those who often help othersare increasingly intelligent and wise. one of the reasons is teaching others, you review the teachings several times. then you understand themand become a person full of wisdom. helping others also brings youmany merits, blessings and energy.
all these plus wisdom mean your charismaand energy will become quite different. the change in you will be significant. several practitioners used to belistless and extremely weak; they spoke so softlythat it was hard to hear them. lacking energy, they could do nothing well. after hearing my teachingsand acting accordingly, they gained confidence. after practicing for some time, their techniques became better. ah, completely different and transformed;they became more alive and brighter.
it's all because of energy, a phenomenondue to the accumulation of energy. how wonderful! you can live happily now. starting a career, you'll succeed easily. making friends, you'll find many true ones. how wonderful! how happy you are! as an ordinary person, without helping others or doing good deeds, you'll never have good friendsto confide in and you'll have no placeto go during holidays; you won't be welcome wherever you go.
so we should help others, pass buddhadharma to benefitand free others from suffering. what kind of life is that? whether you see your radiance or not, you're a living guanyin bodhisattva. this infinite compassionof guanyin bodhisattva is an accumulation of eachand every day, and every small deed. these small acts shine like the billionsof rays from each of buddha's pores. countless, tiny good deeds buildthe entire bodhisattva's body, a great, perfect life.
it's the collectionof many small good deeds. so, how importantit is for us to help others! molding a statue of a buddhais like molding our own future. helping others accomplishesour own bodhisattva life. with such a life, even if you go to hell, you're there to save sentient beings because of your own vowto do so, not for your sins. you'll surely go to heaven, with no birthand no death, the eternal one. how awesome! practicing conscientiously and sincerely
and helping others achievesour own bodhisattva life. all this depends on your understanding.i've told you all i can. if you understand, do as much as you can. as to helping others,your circumstances are irrelevant. in fact, it is your consciousnessthat determines your conduct. for many years, i've been praising water. what is wonderful about water is it remains water all the time,despite in many different forms. right? in cold weather, it turns into iceand snow, decorating the cold winter;
in hot weather, it is liquid.what can block water? it can only be blocked partially;nothing can totally block water. put in bottles, it will evaporate gradually.the whole breaks up into parts. some are unable to help others, but want to start with 300 people. i'd rather you start with one. it's important not to lose your spirit.sometimes, external pressures dampen it. when that is the case, the opportunityto accumulate merit is destroyed. so don't stop practicing the buddha'scompassion at whatever circumstances. when you walk into a temple, starting at the gate,
you'll see statues of heavenly soldiersand generals. all look powerful. in terms of the state of practice, they may be vajras; going further, you'll find arhats, and then bodhisattvas. so, entering a temple, at the entrance, who are the four gods you first see? (four heavenly gods.) yes, you've enteredand stepped into the realm of heaven. outside the realm of heaven, who are those guards at the gates? they are usually vajras and arhats. going further, you'll findincreasingly gentle practitioners. in the centre behind the buddha statuestands that of guanyin bodhisattva.
the buddha, stately and supple,is a combination of firmness and flexibility. this combination of yin and yangis hard to explain; it's neither purely mighty and steely, nor as soft as water either, but rather a combination of all,a perfect image. the female-like bodhisattvas' skinis very soft. so gentle. light from their eyesis not piercing, but soft. some practitioners imitate their gentlewalk and soft manner of speaking. is this a kind of learning? yes, it is. can these gentle bodhisattvasbe destroyed? no.
even if the world is destroyed, they won't be. their heart, body, and bloodare diamond-like. their flowing blood is liquid, yet as hard as diamonds, but still they look very soft. i mean their hardness comesfrom their faith. nobody can change it. they'd rather be burnedor hacked to death than change the compassion and goodnessto which they aspire. these beings are bodhisattvas. many have done very well.
they must have hadthe courage to help many people. however, correct methods must be used. the most important thingis to have strong faith. correct methods will arise from strong faith. it's like water flowing through mountains; flowing to lower places,it becomes extremely powerful. where there are mountains, there are valleys. at deep valleys, water gathers its strength and power. water generates power and supports life.
just imagine how powerful.what can block water? nothing. when the fraser river flows, can we block it? no. you can't block itcompletely, only partially. your compassion should be the same;so should your faith. you can vary your methodsbut not your heart or your will. in this manner, you can succeed. no pain, no gain. if you want to havea deathless body of diamonds and be free from sufferings, you've got to have such a heart. such a heartis surely good for specific needs,
such as achieving freedom from disease. as i said, after 8 years of practice, sakyamuni buddha became enlightened. he attained enlightenment on one day,but he had practiced for 8 years. every dayhe accumulated energy and wisdom. his daily practices and aspirationswere extremely important. it was not only the dayof enlightenment that was important. like cooking steamed buns,it takes half an hour to reach the moment of being cooked.the steaming process is essential. so, be it for bettering health, gaining wisdom or transforming our life,
consistent practice is important. buddhadharma's miraculousnessand inconceivability are ineffable. buddhadharma enables oneto meander between heaven and earth; even an illiterate person can becomea sage and teach it like a professor. it enables an ordinary personto benefit countless people. if you aspire to practice conscientiouslyand as instructed, you can do the same. someone may ask,"do i need to practice for 18 years?" no. you'll be able to help othersafter practicing for 18 days. if you dare to do so,you'll have such energy and wisdom.
of course, such energy and wisdom, along with our aspirations, experiences and accumulated merits, will become more and more powerful. a fellow practitioner, my former disciple, didn't practice hard after i left china. she later came to vancouver. her hard lifemade her a mumbling, dull-witted person. we once had a chat about how one couldgain true achievement so as to help others. i said a complex waywas to practice "six perfections." "my gosh, it'll take forever.i'll never achieve it," she said. then a simple way is by faith. with strong faith in your masterand whatever he says,
you'll be empoweredwith energy instantly. in china, she saw how,in a healing session, i empowered a person who'd neverpracticed to successfully heal other people. recalling this, she asked,"does faith really work? if i'm firm in my faith, can i achieve that?" "being my disciple, how can you be so unsure? good for you to have spoken your mind.i won't teach you if you lack confidence." "i now have faith! i'll do it even ifi have to die." "why would i let you die?" "i even want to revive the dead.no need to die. just breathe."
she said, "i want to help others like you."i said, "aren't you afraid of contagions?" "no, i'm not afraid. i feel ashamedthat i haven't done anything decent despite having studiedwith you so closely. i'm a fool." i said, "all i want is your faith in me.""i do have it. even if you asked me to jump offthe roof, i'd do it." "no need to jump." i then empowered her and said,"you can now heal people." "but how?" "do it any way, as long as youdon't blindly prescribe or do acupuncture." "really?" she was still unsure.i then gave her a paper fan and said, "ok, just strike with or wave the fan.you may feel more confident
when holding something in your hand.you've truly been empowered with energy." she became very firm in her faith. after i left vancouver for taiwanand other places to spread buddhadharma, she used her energy to heal people. she succeeded in healing many people.the results were amazing. when asked how long she'd been practicing, she just made up a number: 30 years. with such good effects, she had to exaggerate;otherwise, people wouldn't trust her. she's called a fairy or bodhisattva, anything but human. the amazing effects were due to her faith.
she had it once i empowered her.in practice, faith is most important. buddha said the same thing.buddha once said that for a buddhist, the three most important thingsare faith, aspiration, and practice. these are the three essentials for buddhistsby which to acquire buddhadharma. faith. belief.absolute faith results in belief. you just believe whatever the buddhasays, which may sound foolish. ordinary people would thinkthis deprives one of his judgment. it just shows its inconceivability.but many truths in buddhism are conceivable. for example, "you reap what you sow";the law of causality is very well accepted.
but to reach a higher state of practice, faith is crucial. some buddhist truthsmake sense to the rational mind. but certain sacred circumstances, like faith, are beyond human comprehension. meditation practice has its sacredness,as does prostration. prostrating is very effective. it has loweredmany people's high blood pressure. three highs: high blood pressure, sugarand cholesterol can also disappear in less than a month of prostrating. it also controls diabetes, heart disease and obesity effectively. prostration is especially effectivein curing digestive problems.
the most unique effectis awakening wisdom. if you practice prostration diligently, your divine eye can be opened. if you haven't got a divine eyeafter 3 years of prostrating, you may be not ready yet. for a buddhist, the three most important things are faith, aspiration, and practice. i've practiced all the techniquesi've taught today. i was always reluctant to switch from one technique in progress tothe next due to the miracles each creates.
prostration can open one's divine eye. sincere chanting for 6 months or a yearwill result in your prophetic ability. but how do you practice? if you chant halfheartedly, you can hardly achieve the mentioned effect. nevertheless,if you chant halfheartedly for a year, you can still becomean auspicious person. that's for sure. if you chant wholeheartedly for a yearusing bodhi immeasurable chanting, you'll become a saintwith prophetic ability. you can even transcend life and deathif you vow to chant wholeheartedly.
your body will diffuse a nice fragrance. some may ask what fragrance it is.it's wondrously sweet for sure. your pure body and open mindcreate the delicate fragrance from within and cause diseases to disappear. does enlightenment guaranteepermanent disappearance of diseases? no. this reminds me of a taoist immortal, known as cripple li. he was immortal but crippled, which also intrigues me. eternal karma exists.he was born crippled. despite his crippled leg, he gaineda diamond body, which isn't bad.
if you can gain a diamond body, evenhaving two crippled legs isn't an issue. but this rarely happens. some karmaisn't alterable, but much karma is. so, you need to conscientiously practicewhat i've taught. if you do so, you'll achievephenomenal power and effect. i've noticed you're really conscientious.you came from afar to practice, so if you aren't,you're wasting your time and money. however difficult the circumstances, we should conscientiously do whateverwe need to according to our aspirations. despite our environment and financial, social status, we should uphold our principles.
in curing diseases, there is nothing that can't be used. even poison can be used.everything can be useful. you can tell what kind of person i am. first and foremost, buddhadharmaand compassion are my life. my methodsare extraordinary and miraculous. some grumble about buddhist practitionersdriving cars. i say, fly a plane if you can. why can lay people drive all sorts of cars, whereas buddhist practitionershave to walk? it's unreasonable. what matters most is what you dowith these things. that's the key.
remember the buddhist fable: a man lured kids out of a burning housewith a spectacular wagon? that's not lying. it's wisdom. had he been honest, the childrenwouldn't have come out if asked. they'd have burned to death. a small white lie led the children to safety.isn't it worthy achieving a big goal? of course,i don't mean to teach you to lie. everything in this world can be usedas a medicine to save life. if it can save life, use it.
some medicinesare highly toxic by nature like arsenic. a famous chinese folkltale tells ofwusong's brother who was poisoned with it. now, medicine for cancer usually contains it.this is called "combat poison with poison." chinese and western medicineare similar in this respect. many medicines can't be used alone.onlymixed with another can it heal humans. then, which worldly method countsas buddhadharma? there's no specific method. if all you think about is revenging, killing, cursing, and destroying in meditation, then you create negative consequences, which isn't good, right?
like tibetan venerable milarepa,in his early practice, he did exactly the same. don't assume everyone doing meditationis practicing good things. not necessarily. some illiterate parents see their childis reading and think he's good. but it's erotic stuff. reading doesn't mean reading good books. an action itself is neither good nor bad. it depends on your intentionthat matters the most. so, our conduct should followthe supreme way that exists in our heart.
the supreme way in your actionmay not be glamorous, but you may still be rememberedas a hero. when you act in real life, you may have tocrawl on the ground and look awkward. however excellent a soldier's kung fu, if he encounters an electric barbedwire fence, he still has to crawl under it. otherwise, despite his excellent kung fu,he'd be electrocuted to death. if he stood up, he'd be shotby the enemy's machine gun. so, if you have to crawl, just do it.it isn't disgraceful at all. remember, falling isn't failure.no, it isn't.
today i am angry or embarrassed.am i a failure? no. a true buddhist discipleshould act like guanyin bodhisattva; change yourselfaccording to sentient beings' needs. to meet sentient beings' needs, he may become a dirty, fly-attracting,stinky, ugly man cleaning a bathroom. he doesn't feel degraded, but only thinks about benefiting people. he doesn't care about his embarrassing, dirty, and shameful appearance. real practitionershave no concept of "face." caring too much about it,you won't achieve any right, good things.
during the spring and autumn periodin chinese history (770-476 bc), king goujian was capturedafter his country was defeated. he did all kinds of hard manual labor. the winner gave him a decent house, thinking he'd always be a captive. but he didn't take it,but lived in a straw hut to inspire himselfto change his situation. he lived in squalor and ate garbage.so as to inspire himself not to fail. in that circumstance,he didn't lose heart, fail, or give up. his eventual victoryis just a natural result.
those who truly failare those who lose heart. those who agonizeover their unemployment are fools. i'd think of being unemployed as good.there must be a better job waiting for me. a strong person thinks that way.the heavenly way applies to everyone. the keyis whether you've lost heart or not. so, we can appear to haveany identity and any image. don't care much about "face."if you do, it does great harm. let me tell you a storyabout "saving face." a girl didn't do well in the nationaluniversity entrance exam;
her parents used their hard-earned moneyto send her to study in canada. previously, she lived with her grandmaand had never left her before. during those years, she'd always sleptwith her grandma in the same bed. when she was abroad alone, she spoke little english; the cost of living was very high; her studies made her stressed; with no friends, she didn't knowhow to make friends, or unwind. after 2 years, she couldn't bear itand had to fly back to see her mom. you can't always get a flight right away.
at that time, daily flights wereunavailable with only one flight a week. she bought her ticket 5 days in advance, but couldn't bear it anymore andhanged herself the day before flight. she missed her momso much that she hanged herself. she felt her road was cut off. with a language barrier, she has no money, no friends; she was embarrassedto tell her family and felt depressed. in short, she felt she'd failed in everything. don't all international studentsexperience the same difficulties?
if you survive the challenges, you've won. but she didn't make it. facing the same problems, different people create different results. many girls take a suitcase going abroad, eventually becoming very rich. it's not uncommon. it's all about your willpower. think about nothing but living, not death at all. "failure has no connection with me at all;i was born a strong person and a winner." the more you think this way,the more creative and wiser you are. creativity just emerges naturally, especially if you believe in buddhism.
wherever you go, the buddhawill protect and take care of you. there's always a way out. if you cut it offin your heart, then, there surely isn't any. many understand that poor girl's situation.with no way out, she committed suicide. another story: a rich taiwanese manalso committed suicide. a calculation after his deathshowed his assets totaled $1 billion. he could travel around the worldyear-round and enjoy a hedonistic lifestyle. why to die? guess what's his will? "life is too boring;i can buy whatever i want. it's annoying. life is meaningless. my life's splendorvanished; the true meaning of life was gone."
don't assume only poverty drives peopleto desperation. so does immense wealth. what is considered a good life?it's that our heart is full of hope. we're chasing and can always achieve it,but not in an absolute sense. it's infinite compassion. compassion has no ceiling. you may wonder if you've gained itat a certain level. no, it has no end point. you'll ask yourself, "i feel i'm infinitelycompassionate, but what have i done?" you realize you still have a lot to do.continue.
we offered help in the recent disasters. but when you see real pain, you realize your help is far from enough. in many places in the world, there'reno natural disasters but many human ones. those places also need your help.can you help them all? you've helped many people, but in a few years most of them will die; another group of afflicted peoplewill be born; you'll have to help them too. before you've helped very many, you'll be dead as well. so, you always head toward the idealwhose finish line can never be reached. so, our heart will forever remain alive, which is a good deal. you'll never despair.
engaging in the buddhist causeof helping keeps you busier and busier. you always have tons of things to do.i'm now like this. if i could have a month of retreat, that'd be the most luxurious thingin my life. i just don't have time. you can sit and practicein this center for 7 days straight. do you know how longit took to get it ready? at least 1.5 yearswith numerous sleepless nights. many local and overseas practitionersvowed to help,
donated funds, and worked on the spot. every buddha and bodhisattva statue, every piece of the floor, and every cushioncontains their painstaking labor. the stories are so moving that i canhardly continue my lecture. so touching. many donors are not rich people at all.they are actually very poor. an old lady lives in poverty, but is still good-hearted. i asked her son if she hadany special wish. no. does she wish to go to heavenafter death? no. she only hopes more peoplebenefit from bodhi meditation.
many donors want something in return. "master, here is my donation, please guide me to the landof buddha after my death," or "ensure my child's admittanceto college," or "bless my childwith a good spouse and future." this lady has no requestbut to benefit people. who is this? a bodhisattva. we need to integratebodhisattva spirit into our own life. you don't look like a bodhisattva, but most of the people who know you
would see youas a real guanyin bodhisattva. it's not because of your miracles, but your compassion; they're extremely happy to see you.if you're like this, you're a bodhisattva. compassion has no limit. help others from their birth to death. when practitioners, neighbors, and relatives give birth to babies, celebrate birthdays, we shouldbuy a gift and participate in celebration. when someone passes awayand needs chanting, we can chant for him. of course it depends.
some families don't believe in chanting;if you chant, you'll be told off. that's no good. everything has its place. causesand conditions must be considered. if parents invite you to chant, but their children oppose, that's problematic. so, we must be careful. doing good deeds requiresboth sincerity and common sense. if done improperly, good deeds may become bad ones. proper helping requires good sense.don't be too blunt.
nothing is absolute; leave yourselfenough room when dealing with situations. only when people are grateful and wishfor help do we perform our good deeds. if a person asks for a day, don't chant for 3 days. don't forget he has to go to work. so, you must use your brain and observe people's reactionsand figure out their needs. this is extremely important. right thoughts and compassionare what we must have. when we help others,we must be aware that many afflictions
are related to cultures, customs, religions, family backgrounds, childhood environments, education, knowledge, personalities, stages of life, etc. all of these factorsneed to be considered. it sounds very complicated,so how do we help others? though it sounds complicated, once you'reaware of these, you'll be able to observe. then when you offer your help, you can do it more effectively and properly. i'd like to remind you:if you don't practice, you don't have the abilityto help others. you must practiceby following my methods,
including exercise, diet, and helping others. also, we need to have a happy mind. have you read the ups and downs of lifethrough the eyes of the awakened? (yes.) it's a simple book. with a different perspective,we can resolve many problems. this is wisdom. a different thought, feelingor perspective is another angle. you'll find a different world. simply put, human effort determines results.
some business peoplekeep their prices low but still turn a profit. others only want to make big profitsby charging $15 per bowl instead of $5. if you have no business, you'll lose lots of money, right? different people doing the same thingmay have different results. what does this indicate? thoughts and methods vary;most importantly, a difference in views. in the book, many conceptsand philosophical views are expounded on from my ownand an ordinary person's perspective. in fact, those conceptsare conducive to handling daily affairs.
i hope you read the book and introduce itto your relatives and friends. this is necessary;it's a way of helping others. we help others in many different ways.there isn't a fixed way. the way is determined by our mind. to practice the bodhisattva way, first learn to observe the needs of others, then use an appropriate methodto help release people from sufferings.
